St. Stephen Fish Lift

Join Aquarium staff, as we travel to St. Stephen, SC for the first adult-only field trip!  Imagine that you’re a fish that’s traveled thousands of miles to lay your eggs in freshwater, only to find a dam blocking your access. Have no fear! The US Army Corps of Engineers’ has solved this problem. By using a lock, or “fish lift”, hundreds of thousands of fish are lifted more than 60 feet and passed through the St. Stephen dam, into Lake Moultrie, to complete their life cycles.  The trip will include an expert-led behind the scenes tour of the fish lift facility including the control room, top view catwalk, underwater viewing window and the SCDNR’s Jack D. Bayless hatchery. Bring your binoculars, as birds like to take advantage of the swimming buffet. Need a lift? Transportation will be provided by School Wheels Direct. Member tickets $15, reservations required. Register today by calling (843) 577-3474.
